Springtime Tokyo on a Brompton: A Relaxed Urban Ride Report
A special day riding through springtime Tokyo.
On April 12, 2025, under clear skies and temperatures approaching 20°C, perfect cycling conditions welcomed riders for a Brompton tour through central Tokyo with Kenta. Starting from Gaienmae, the route connected famous Tokyo landmarks like Tokyo Station, Kyu-Yasuda Garden, and Asakusa—like a “bike version” of a sightseeing bus tour. It was a luxurious day blending tourism and cycling.
The ride began at Brompton Tokyo!
Participants gathered at the newly opened Brompton Tokyo (March 2025), where they were greeted by rows of Bromptons in a warm, wood-toned space. After introductions and a briefing, excitement filled the room. Some had even traveled from faraway places like Hokkaido and Toyama! Everyone could feel the promise of a fun-filled day ahead, gathered around the Discover Ride logo.
Before departure, first-time Brompton riders received a careful lesson on folding and gear shifting.Participants were amazed by the ride performance hidden within the compact and stylish appearance of the Brompton.
After reviewing the basics, the ride begins.Escaping the hustle and bustle, the group weaved through quiet backstreets—a unique joy of this ride. The journey of “rediscovering Tokyo” had officially begun.
The Brompton group entered Uchibori-dori, a major central road, heading toward Tokyo Station. Thanks to the weekend, traffic was lighter than usual, making for an unexpectedly smooth urban ride. The contrast of moatside greenery and skyscrapers captured the essence of Tokyo perfectly.
Look at Kenta’s smile!
Beneath Tokyo’s clear spring skies, the moment he began pedaling, a natural smile spread across his face. The group, though meeting for the first time, shared an atmosphere of warmth and unity.
The group arrived at Sakuradamon Gate, a remnant of Edo Castle’s history.Cycling slowly under its massive stone structures was a truly memorable experience.
At a crosswalk near Tokyo Station, surrounded by skyscrapers, the riders pushed their bikes across. It looked like a scene from a Beatles album cover. With many tourists around, the international vibe made for a unique and vibrant urban cycling moment.
At the Marunouchi side of Tokyo Station, where red-brick architecture meets glass skyscrapers, everyone stopped to take a group photo in front of the stunning backdrop.
It’s not just sightseeing—time for a surprise true-or-false quiz with Kenta!
This round’s theme: Tokyo Station trivia. Faces turned serious as everyone focused. That unique “laid-back but passionate” vibe is what makes Discover Ride special.
Winners of the quiz were rewarded with Kenta’s favorite snack—Haribo gummies!
A simple treat, but it brought out big smiles all around.
Leaving Tokyo Station, the group headed toward Ryogoku on their Bromptons. As they passed through high-rise districts, the cityscape—and atmosphere—gradually began to shift.
Arriving in Ryogoku, the streets in front of the Kokugikan Sumo Stadium were filled with colorful banners. With the Spring Tournament in full swing, the whole area was livelier than usual.
The second stop was Kyu-Yasuda Garden, a lush green oasis where the line of black Bromptons stood out beautifully against the tranquil scenery. It’s hard to believe you’re still in the heart of the city.
Another round of the “Kenta Quiz!” Before everyone could relax, Kenta launched another true-or-false quiz—this time about the garden. Applause erupted for correct answers, making it a joyful moment for all.
After the excitement of the quiz, riders relaxed in the calm atmosphere of the garden—an oasis of peace in the city.
Next stop: Jukken Bridge, a perfect spot to capture Tokyo Skytree in its entirety. With the tower rising across the river, the group stopped for a commemorative photo.
Then down to the base of the Tokyo Skytree, where its towering presence and elegant structure took everyone’s breath away.
Lunch break at “LAND A”, a café near the Skytree. With pizza, curry, salad, and drinks available buffet-style, riders filled their stomachs and hearts after a good ride.
Fueling up for the afternoon ride, riders enjoyed the healthy spread with plenty of vegetables—refreshing both body and mind.
Lunch was also a great time to connect, as riders chatted about routes, bike setups, and shared cycling stories, bringing everyone closer together.
The afternoon ride continued along the Sumida River. Although the cherry blossoms had mostly fallen, the quiet riverside was open and relaxing, perfect for slow pedaling in the spring breeze.
A perfect time for a gentle ride, with bright spring sunshine and cool breezes adding to the post-lunch relaxation.
Before the water bus, the group visited Matsuchiyama Shoden Temple nearby. Along the way, they passed Jinrikisha(rickshaws) and enjoyed the classic Asakusa atmosphere.
Kenta made a prayer offering on behalf of the group—at this temple, people traditionally offer daikon radishes for good health and relationships.
A small yet beautiful garden inside the temple, with colorful plants creating a peaceful, painterly setting.
Time for the highlight—boarding the water bus! The vibrant boarding area in Asakusa buzzed with tourists.
Bromptons boarded with ease, thanks to advance booking. The folding bikes were brought on board smoothly—adding to the special adventure vibe.
Smartly stowed on deck, the folded Bromptons took up little space and were securely tied down for a worry-free ride.
Tokyo from the river was a whole new experience, with bridges, wind, and light adding rhythm to the cruise.
Everyone enjoyed the moment, gazing at the water and skyline, soaking in the serene ride.
Kenta relaxed at a classic table seat, basking in the warm sunlight and gentle sway of the boat—feeling like a mini-cruise.
Arriving at Hinode Pier, the 40-minute cruise wrapped up with a sea breeze and scenic skyline. Thanks to the Bromptons, everyone could continue their journey effortlessly right off the boat.
From Hinode Pier to Tokyo Tower. The final destination of the day was Tokyo Tower. This part of the city, lined with skyscrapers, offers a different atmosphere from the nostalgic charm of Asakusa.
The final stop: Tokyo Tower. Its red and white silhouette stood tall against the blue sky—an unmistakable symbol of the city. Unlike the modern Skytree, it holds a nostalgic, heartwarming presence that brought smiles to everyone’s faces.
Riding beneath the Tokyo Tower, its steel frame glowing in the afternoon light, surrounded by fresh greenery—a picture-perfect finale to the day.
Near the finish, a slow parade ride through the tree-lined path of Jingu Gaien. Bathed in sunlight and surrounded by greenery, it was a scenic stretch that felt far removed from the bustling city.
Back to Brompton Tokyo to finish the ride. After covering about 20 km, the day concluded with a satisfying mix of iconic landmarks, good food, fun conversation, and perfect weather—a “relaxed but rich” ride that only a bicycle could offer.
