DAY 2 is over!
I want to somehow dodge the rain and finish today's race!
Start of Day 2
The day before, the forecast called for rain, but luckily it stayed cloudy.
After breakfast at the hotel, we started day 2 during rush hour. We rode through the city for a while, weaving through traffic jams of motorcycles.
Scenic point with tidal flats
Fēngqíng Wetland Coast
7 kilometers from the hotel, we arrived at the Fēngqíng Wetland Coast. Some people were out on the tidal flats that stretch across the Taiwan Strait. It is said to be famous for its beautiful sunset.
Coastal "self-propelled vehicle paths" (bike paths)
17km of Splendid Coastline Cycling Path
Take the 17km of Splendid Coastline Cycling Path, a north-south bike path running along the coastline, and head further south from the Fēngqíng Wetland Coast. Ride at your leisure, enjoying the seaside scenery without worrying about cars and motorcycles.
Arrived at the end of the 17-kong-ri self-propelled vehicle road
Bike path still going on
After about 7km on the bike path, you will arrive at the end point of the 17km of Splendid Coastline Cycling Path.
A lighthouse-like tower has been erected where you can take a break and look at the road you have traveled.
Further south from here, the bike path with another name, 綠光海風自行車道(lǜ guāng hǎi fēng zì xíng chē dào), continues for about 68km.
Take a break while visiting the colorful Kannon temple.
Arrive at Qinghai Temple (Miaoli County) and rest
We turned off the bike path onto the public road and took a break at the Qinghai Temple, which Sam sded.
The giant sea goddess (Mazu), who gazes in the direction of the sea, is enshrined to protect local fishermen and others from maritime accidents.
Many tourists visit the temple to pray, as it is said to protect them from other disasters in addition to maritime and water accidents.
The colorful statue of Mazu is certainly a blessing.
Taiwanese classic gourmet lunch
湾麗排骨酥面 (wān lí|lì pái|pǎi gū|gǔ sū miàn)
We took a lunch break at the Yuanli area at the 60km mark, halfway through today's itinerary. Here, we had a traditional Taiwanese dish called "Baked pork ribs & noodles. The dish is a warm noodle soup with braised pork belly, served in a light and refreshing broth. The noodles are soft and similar to Japanese udon noodles.
Coffee break at a small café in a back alley
Brewband Coffee
About 12km after lunch, I took a break at Brewband Coffee, a café quietly operating in a back alley in the Dajia area. Renovated from an old apartment building, the interior is a relaxed adult space.
We ordered three kinds of cakes handmade in the store, all of which were delicious.
The peanut millefeuille in the center of the photo is the "best cake I've ever had in my life," signed, A Nut Aficionado.
The peanut millefeuille in the center of the photo was packed with the flavor of peanuts, a rare treat in Japan.
Mysterious view of giant windmills spinning
Windmill Avenue in Gaomi Wetlands
After replenishing your calories with cake, go to Sam's recommended spot, "Windmill Avenue in Gaomi Wetlands.
The Dajia area has strong sea winds, and a large number of wind turbines (windmills) have been built along the sea.
The photo shows only a small portion of them. Many windmills were also built off-shore.
First Discover Ride! follower met abroad
Mr. Maxi
While photographing a windmill, We were suddenly approached by a young road cyclist.
He is "Maxi" a Japanese exchange student who is a fan of my YouTube channel.
Based on the GPS data that we transmits while riding, he rode his bicycle from 30km away to meet us! Two Japanese riders riding in Taiwan, shoulder to shoulder for a commemorative photo.
Last spurt with the wind on our side
North wind in winter in Taiwan
After getting cheered up by Maxi, we headed further south on National Highway 17 to the Lugang area, where our lodgings were located, for the last time.
In Taiwan, strong northerly winds blow in winter. If you drive southward on the west side of Taiwan, you will receive a tailwind, which allows you to ride at a cruising speed of 30km/h or more on level ground.
Arrived at our lodgings for the second day!
Lukang1953
Tonight's accommodation is a guesthouse tucked away in a residential area of Deer Harbor.
It's a private house, so feel free to use it. Of course, bicycles can be stored on the premises.
The exterior of the house is quite old, but the interior has been renovated and is beautiful and stylish.
The living room and dining room are on the first floor, and the three bedrooms are on the second floor.
There was also a washing machine and detergent provided so you could do laundry.
Carb loading party with room food
P&P 悠活館 (yōu huó guǎn)
After showering and doing laundry, dinner time inevitably gets late.
Compared to Japan, restaurants close earlier in rural areas of Taiwan, so I used Uber Eats for the first time on Discover Ride.
We ordered pizza and pasta at the Italian restaurant "P&P 悠活館 (yōu huó guǎn)" near our lodgings.
The next day, Day 3, was the longest ride of the trip, 150km.
After carb loading, we went to bed early to prepare for the next day.
